October 2019: CEIA’s Director, Matt Waldman, is honored to have been made a Visiting Fellow at Harvard Law School’s Program on Negotiation. Waldman was delighted to join an institution that has conducted pioneering research on negotiation and mediation, and achieved breakthroughs in the field of dispute resolution.
Waldman plans to use the Fellowship to share and discuss with colleagues the innovative approaches that CEIA has developed through its on-going work on the role of empathy and psychology in conflict resolution. He is looking forward to ensuring that CEIA’s policy-relevant research and advanced training programs benefits from the insights of scholars and practitioners.
Advanced Skills Workshop
Waldman was also delighted to have the opportunity to lead an Advanced Skills Workshop at Harvard Law School for graduate students on 25 October 2019. Organised in collaboration with the Harvard Negotiation and Mediation Clinical Program, the workshop addressed the Mediation of Armed Conflict.
Among a wide range of issues, the workshop explored techniques for discerning and managing biases, emotions and perceptions, and for building trust and rapport with warring parties. The workshop emphasized the critical role of empathy, and its utility for mediators, especially when used in conjunction with other established mediation skills. Grateful for diverse and active participation, Waldman looks forward to further interaction with students and faculty over the course of his Fellowship.
